More than 50 years ago, the late James “Jim” Slyman had a vision. Just five years earlier, he graduated from Carson-Newman University with a major in business and minor in economics and took a covetable position working for the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). Since high school, however, the Knoxville native had been fascinated with real estate. In 1971, he was ready to put his passion into action. Jim finished his last day at TVA on a Friday and opened Slyman Real Estate & Auction Company in the back room of a Hallmark card shop the following Monday.

Today, Slyman Real Estate & Auction is an integral part of the regional real estate landscape. Based in Knoxville with a branch in Atlanta, both run by Jim’s children, the agency is a true reflection of their father’s legacy. A total of five members of the Slyman family have been joined by over two dozen of Knoxville’s finest Realtors in providing a boutique atmosphere with big-company results. At the forefront of their mission is the same dedication to ethical service that earned Jim a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award from the East Tennessee REALTORS® association.
